Tattered Tales from Ebel Alley™
Schlikz The Gambler Schlikz rolled into town down at the tracks. I hear tell he came from the other side. He’s so smooth and he never changes his expression. I hear tell they call that them there a poker face. He’s got a place down at the Pool Palace because Todz has a poker game every Friday and Schlikz usually cleans up. He rarely looses. He spends the rest of his time down at the Watering Hole Saloon except when he’s been challenged to a duel which is everyday. Some of the residers will bet him grubs just to see if he’ll do it. I hear tell that one time Mister Mayor bet him a month’s wages that Schlikz wouldn’t jump off the top of fence at the hole in the wall next to the Cannery. Never one to back down, Schlikz strapped a bed pillow onto his backside and had Whitey, Buzzette’z friend from the circus, fly him up to the top of the bush beyond the fence on the other side, up really, really high, so high they looked like a speck in the blues (sky).. On the count of eights’n’four, Schlikz did a nose dive down, and down, and down he came, faster and faster. When he was just about to crash, he pulled up the pillow and floated the rest of the way. Mister Mayor was furious that he lost the wager because he didn’t have any money to bet. But I hear tell that he did pay up only we don’t know where he got it from. I hear tell that Schlikz has a bad temperature. He blows up at the drop of a shoe. There was this one here time that Huckster spilled a bucket of paint on Schlikz new dudes. Quicker than a mule backing into a cactus, Schlikz did such a turnaround and hauled off and landed a knuckle sandwich right smakes on Hucksters’ eye. Then there was this one here time that Schlikz was down at Gorg’s Butcher Shop and Gorg tried to slight the order. Schlikz jumped over the edge and they were going at it until Yoz showed up. Then you would have thought they were the best of buddies. That Schlikz ain’t afraid of of no butcher’s block. I hear tell his back is covered in scarfaces from all the fights he’s been in. But most of the time Schlikz just sits down at the Pool Palace playing with his cards.
