THE STORYTELLER
Gabler was a strange little guy, not of our world, as we know it. He who
would sit around all day just waiting for someone to pass by. His excitement
would explode if someone would stop and listen to his tattered tales about Ebel
Alley. His stories are very, very true and made little sense to those who
didn’t know about the residers in Ebel Alley. But most of the time his tales
don’t make any sense what so ever to anyone. And that’s the way Gabler liked
it. Gabler has a gift for gab and somehow manages to twist and turn tales about
the simple life in Ebel Alley until then even the most reasonable man would
throw up his hands and walk on by. He’s had no real job that we know of. Many
looked upon him as a quirky old goat. Others see past the fact that he looked
like a dirty old bum and considered him a real master in disguise. He was the
one and only true historian of Ebel, hiding his real identity to learn the
secrets of our world. Or perhaps it was the other way around. Regardless, Gabler
is quite a character in his own right. He only tells tales about the other
residers, never ever about himself.
Know one knows for sure just what Gabler did in the old days. He never talks
about himself or things he did as a boy. The word is he rode the trains from
Ebel Alley to the other side and one day he fell off on the other side and
wasn’t able to get back on the train for days. They say he’s been a little
touched in the head since then and never left Ebel Alley again. He just sits in
the same spot every day and spins his tales to anyone who will stop for a short
time to listen.
Some of the younger whippersnappers think he’s the oldest resider but some
say Stumpy has been around forever. And they also say that Stumpy hasn’t ever
been out of Ebel Alley, ever. I’m sure if you wait long enough, Gabler has a
story or two to tell about him too.
The tattered tales told here in this book are word for word as Gabler has
told them over and over again. Well, it’s close to word for word but Ebelish
doesn’t always translate into English very well. He knows all about everything
that goes on in Ebel Alley and everyone who lives there and spins his tattered
tales to anyone who will listen. Well, actually, he tells them even if no one is
listening or even near him. He just rattles on and on, day in and day out. Most
residers just smile and wave and keep moving because they know once Gabler gets
going on one of his tattered tales, he never stops.
