What is a Fashion Doll Makeover?

A manufactured doll has all factory paint is removed.  A complete facial makeover is hand painted with the finest quality artist brushes, acrylic paint and sealers.  My colors are custom mixed.  I hand paint eyes realistically and are PAPERWEIGHT-GLAZED™ finished (a trademark of my work) The clear glaze creates a natural look and light reflection.  The hair is washed, cut, restyled, re-rooted or a custom wig applied.  Original design costumes are designed and custom made by the artist.  Each doll comes in it's original papers, original box, and shipping container, unless otherwise noted.  A photo certificate of authenticity is included with each repaint makeover by the Painted Lady™.

Much ado has been made over the use and misuse of the term, OOAK.  There are many in this field that believe that by changing the outer appearance of an existing, manufactured form makes the doll a OOAK.  According to the standards set years ago by our peers in the doll industry, to be considered as a OOAK the doll must be created from scratch without the use of molds.  As an original doll artist, even if I sculpt an original doll but make plaster molds to finish the doll and only make one, it is still considered a reproduction.   Makeovers, no matter how brilliantly executed, are not OOAK's even though the makeover artist may never repeat their design.  Because it is not recognized as a OOAK according to the standards of definitions of doll does not diminish the value of the  creativity, workmanship, artistry nor the uniqueness of a one only..

The makeover community is overflowing with talent.  The quality of workmanship, the uniqueness of designs, and creativity is in most cases, far superior to manufactured dolls because each doll is approached one-on-one.  I am amazed by what I have seen created by others in the makeover industry.

WHAT ARE LINDA STEELE'S PAPERWEIGHT-GLAZED EYES©?
©2003 Linda Steele

When I began making dolls back in 1979, I did like most, I used glass eyes and set them in the dolls head.  I was just beginning in the business and the glass eyes were very expensive.  I became very frustrated when I would get an order of the glass eyes and the pupils didn't match.  I still have a small collection of those eyes.

Looking for an alternative to the expensive, miss-matched glass eyes, I began looking at advertisements for glasses and contact lens.  I also studied my own eyes in the mirror.  If I remember correctly, the first eyes I painted on a doll was in 1980 and have been doing it ever since.  My technique for painting eyes have become a trademark of my work.

What does PAPERWEIGHT-GLAZED™ mean?  If you are familiar with dolls and paperweight eyes you know that they are very expensive, finely detailed, and they are dome shaped.  Basically, that is what my dolls eyes are, except they are hand painted with a 6/0 liner brush.

After I finish with the eye painting and have applied the lashes, I put on a clear, high gloss glaze with a finishing touch which I am not going to reveal.   As a result, the eyes are dome shaped creating a natural appearance
