Hypoglycemia
Hypoglycemia is a
condition found in toy breeds less than 5 months of age. These dogs
have more brain mass per
body weight as compared to other breeds and therefore, need
more glucose for brain
function. Other causes may include : excessive exercise or stress
such as a routine car
trip, which occurs in the absence of a meal. Pups need to eat
Every 3 -4 hours.
Signs: Weakness, tired or
droopy, listlessness, and loss of appetite. These are followed
by a loss of mental
alertness, wobbliness, muscle twitching or shaking, seizures and
death can result.
SO PLEASE TAKE THIS WARNING SERIOUSLY! Not all the above
signs mean your pup has
hypoglycemia. It may have something else. Please just keep
In touch with your vet.
Treatment: If the
puppy is awake, give it honey, Nutri-Cal, or karo syrup by mouth or use a
syringe.
Prevention: Prevent
hypoglycemia from happening by allowing only 15-20 minutes play at a time
followed
by a nap or rest. Do not allow your puppy to get too tired. Supervise closely
with kids to make
sure
your puppy is getting adequate rest. Its good to keep the following items on
hand : a syringe,
pedialyte, nutri-cal, meat
baby food, yogurt, and canned puppy food.
